Soft enamel pins are the craft register — recessed metal outlines, raised plating (gold, silver, black nickel, antique brass), colour filled by hand and cured. They photograph with texture and shadow, which is why the design community keeps reaching for them. Hard enamel (cloisonné) takes it further: the enamel is polished flat to the metal so the badge reads as a single jewelled surface. Printed dome badges sit between the two — a printed graphic sealed under a clear epoxy dome, mounted on a metal base. They handle full-colour artwork like a tin button but carry the weight of an enamel pin. Woven and embroidered fabric badges are the uniform register: iron-on, sew-on or Velcro, excellent on caps, polos and workwear. Attachments matter more than people expect. Butterfly clutches are standard and cheap; rubber clutches hold better through a long event; magnetic backs are the executive choice for fine tailoring; bulldog clips suit high-turnover conference use where delegates swap badges between sessions. On sizing: 25mm reads as a mark, 38mm as a statement, 58mm as a campaign, 75mm as a rally. Under 20mm in enamel, fine type starts to close up — our studio will flag that on proof. Always order a pre-production sample on enamel runs. The mould is a one-time investment, and the first strike is the one that tells you the plating, colour fill and line weight are where they need to be.
